April
The Ministry of Transport (MOT) began basic surveys for the construction of the new airport.
1971
October
MOT sought recommendations form the Aviation Council on the scale and location of a Kansai international airport.
November
MOT conducted surveys on noise pollution by aircraft at three candidate sites (Senshu, Kobe, and Akashi).
1972
August
The Civil Aviation Bureau held a meeting with the local community.
1973
August
MOT conducted surveys on air pollution by aircraft at three candidate sites.
1974
August
The Council for Civil Aviation submitted to MOT a report recommending the Senshu offshore area as the best option in terms of scale and location (initial report).
1975
September
MOT held a briefing for the local community.
1977
October
The construction of offshore monitoring facilities (MT station) was completed.
1978
February
MOT released a plan to conduct studies on noise, vibration, and air pollution, and it started the surveys.
March
MOT started drilling surveys at the surrounding areas of the candidate site.
1979
May
MOT carried out an actual aircraft flight study.
1981
May
MOT presented the "Troika"set of proposals to the three prefectural governments:Airport Plan for the Kansai International Airport;Kansai International Airport Environmental Impact Assessment;Regional Development Plan.
1983
December
MOT started seabed improvement experiments off the coast of Senshu.
1984
October
The Kansai International Airport Co.,Ltd. (KIAC) was established.
1985
October
KIAC submitted to the Osaka Prefectural Government an "Environmental impact assessment preliminary report"
1986
February
Establishment of the Kansai International Airport Environment Surveillance Organization (composed of the governor of Osaka and the mayors of 8 cities and 5 towns of Senshu;presently 9 cities and 4 towns).
June
Submission of the environmental impact assessment report to the Osaka Prefectural Government.
December
The Airport Environmental Monitoring Plan was established and environmental monitoring started.
1987
January
The Governor of Osaka Prefecture licensed KIAC to carry out reclamation of public waters for construction of the airport.
Start of work for the first phase.
June
Start of work for the airport access bridge.
Establishment of the Kansai International Airport General Environment Center.
August
Installation of silt protection sheets.
1989
June
Completion of the phase 1 airport island seawall.
1994
January
Completion of work for all sections of phase 1.
March
Establishment of the Environmental Monitoring Plan concerning the siting and operation of Kansai International Airport.
July
Kansai International Airport Environment Center was opened.
September
Opening of the airport (September 4)
Start of monitoring of aircraft noise and low frequency air vibration.
1995
August
The council of civil aviation released an interim report on the 7th five year airport development program.
1996
June
Establishment of the Kansai International Airport Land Development Co.,Ltd.(June 11).
Designation of the Kansai International Airport Land Development Co.,Ltd. as development entities by the Transport Minister.
1997
June
MOT submitted a comprehensive activity plan regarding Kansai International Airport flight routes.
December
Submission of the environmental impact assessment plan for phase 2.
1998
April
Submission of the environmental impact assessment preliminary report for phase 2.
October
Submission of the environmental impact assessment for phase 2.
December
Introduction of new flight routes,review of the Environmental Monitoring Plan regarding aircraft noise, and strengthening of the monitoring.
1999
June
Establishment of the Environment Monitoring Plan for phase 2
July
The governor of Osaka Prefecture licensed the company to carry out reclamation work in public waters for 2nd phase.
Start of work for phase 2 (July 14)
Installation of a silt protection sheet.
November
International Symposium commemorating the 5th anniversary of the airport opening.
December
Accreditation of environment management system (ISO 14001) by the Kansai International Airport Land Development Co.,Ltd.
2001
January
Establishment of the environment management committee of the Kansai International Airport Co.,Ltd.
April
KIX was awarded the "Monument of the Millennium"from the American Society of Civil Engineers as the first airport on an ocean in the world.
June
Mapping out of the "Kansai International Airport Environment Management Plan (Eco Island Plan)"by the Kansai International Airport Co.,Ltd.

Start of placing wave dissipating blocks for attachment of seaweed onto the seawall of the second airport island

Opening of the International Symposium 2001
